Crosswind Calculator

Calculate headwind and crosswind components for runway operations.

Enter 1-360 (e.g., Runway 27 = 270)
Direction wind is coming FROM (0-360)

Crosswind Limits

Typical demonstrated crosswind limits:

AircraftMax Crosswind
C172 / PA-2815 knots
C182 / PA-3217 knots
Student Pilots5-10 knots

*Demonstrated crosswind is not a limitation. Use personal minimums based on proficiency.

Quick Mental Math

  • 30 deg off: Crosswind = Wind x 0.5
  • 45 deg off: Crosswind = Wind x 0.7
  • 60 deg off: Crosswind = Wind x 0.87
  • 90 deg off: Crosswind = Full wind

Understanding Wind Components

Formulas

Crosswind = Wind Speed x sin(Wind Angle)

Headwind = Wind Speed x cos(Wind Angle)

Effects on Operations

  • Headwind: Shorter takeoff/landing distances, slower ground speed
  • Tailwind: Longer distances, faster ground speed (avoid if possible)
  • Crosswind: Requires crab/slip correction, more challenging
