Density Altitude Calculator
Calculate density altitude for aircraft performance planning.
Performance Impact
High density altitude affects:
- Increased takeoff distance
- Reduced rate of climb
- Reduced engine power output
- Reduced propeller efficiency
- Higher true airspeed at same indicated airspeed
Quick Reference
| Density Alt | Performance Impact |
|---|---|
| < 3,000 ft | Good performance |
| 3,000-6,000 ft | Moderate impact |
| 6,000-9,000 ft | Significant impact |
| > 9,000 ft | Severe impact |
Understanding Density Altitude
What is Density Altitude?
Density altitude is the altitude in the International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) that has the same air density as the actual conditions. It's the altitude at which the aircraft "thinks" it's flying based on air density.
Calculation Formula
Pressure Altitude = Field Elevation + (29.92 - Altimeter) x 1000
Density Altitude = Pressure Altitude + 120 x (OAT - Standard Temp)
Factors That Increase Density Altitude
- Higher field elevation
- Higher temperature (warmer than standard)
- Lower pressure (lower altimeter setting)
- High humidity (minor effect)
