Understanding Weight & Balance

Why It Matters

Proper weight and balance is critical for safe flight. An overweight aircraft requires more runway, climbs slower, and may not clear obstacles. An out-of-balance aircraft may be difficult or impossible to control.

Key Formulas

Moment = Weight x Arm

CG = Total Moment / Total Weight

Useful Load = Max Gross Weight - Empty Weight

Effects of CG Position

  • Forward CG: More stable, higher stall speed, more elevator authority needed
  • Aft CG: Less stable, lower stall speed, reduced elevator authority
