Weight & Balance Calculator
Calculate total weight and center of gravity position for your aircraft.
Quick Reference
Common aircraft W&B reference points:
| Aircraft | Fwd CG | Aft CG | Max Wt |
|---|---|---|---|
| C172S | 35.0" | 47.3" | 2,550 lbs |
| C182T | 36.5" | 47.2" | 3,100 lbs |
| PA-28-181 | 82.0" | 93.0" | 2,550 lbs |
*Always verify with your aircraft's POH/AFM
Understanding Weight & Balance
Why It Matters
Proper weight and balance is critical for safe flight. An overweight aircraft requires more runway, climbs slower, and may not clear obstacles. An out-of-balance aircraft may be difficult or impossible to control.
Key Formulas
Moment = Weight x Arm
CG = Total Moment / Total Weight
Useful Load = Max Gross Weight - Empty Weight
Effects of CG Position
- Forward CG: More stable, higher stall speed, more elevator authority needed
- Aft CG: Less stable, lower stall speed, reduced elevator authority
